This song is from the Pablo Honey era, was written before Creep, and was originally based on the Hungerford Massacre near Oxford in 1987. A lone gunman walked into a school killing as he went. The defining lyric was originally, don't shoot your gun but Thom replaced this with just like your dad.. The death of Kurt Cobain was still heavily in the press before the time of The Bends release and one of the weekly music papers had featured a front page spread of Thom with the words, Thom Yorke...the next Kurt Kobain? The lyrics were changed because the band didn't want the media to misinterperet the song, believing it was about Cobain and Thom being another 'rock' martyr. As a result Thom grew bored of the whole affair and gave up on the song, and it was hardly played live as a result. The changed lyrics take away the power and presence the song had before and as a result it is the weakest track on The Bends.
Radiohead playing a country song from the 70s is something I never expected.
it was on the Radio here in in Denmark back in the 70s, I remember it from my childhood, Thom Yorke is probably the same.

Reminds of a break up few years ago , I’d went driving with a friend and she put this on in the car and it was a cold October day and it just really relieved that the worst felt like it was over , very emotional song.. I’m sure most of you have an attachment to this song the same .

1980 - yeah man, recorded in downtown Winston-Salem, North Carolina! It was different at the time, I had never heard anything quite like 1,000,000. I wrote Michael Stipe a letter asking about lyrics. This was several years later regarding a song on Reckoning, "Letter Never Sent". As an enticement to try and get him to tell me what the heck he was singing I sent him a Xerox book on something esoteric, but all he said was, "Dear Mike: Thank you for the Xerox book I hope to delve into it soon. I can offer no words on L.S.N. Peace, Michael.". I really should have known better, but I do think it was quite polite of him to at least write back and say no.
